The family rules are where Saint Lucia stands out. The fund contribution covers four people, and the list of dependants is one of the widest in the Caribbean. The current definition comes from Amendment Act No. 22 of 2025, published on the CIU legislation page.

Who counts as a qualifying dependant

Family memberCondition
SpouseOf the applicant
ChildOf the applicant or spouse, 21 or younger
Adult childOf the applicant or spouse, up to 30 and fully supported
ParentOf the applicant or spouse, over 55 and fully supported
Brother or sisterOf the applicant, unmarried, under 18, with consent of a parent or guardian
Dependant with a disabilityAny age, physically or mentally challenged and fully supported

Two things I notice in practice. Parents qualify from 56, much younger than in several neighbouring programmes. And the old requirement that a child over 18 must be in full-time study is gone: for children up to 30 the test is now full financial support.

How support is proven

“Fully supported” needs paper evidence: bank transfers, shared address, school or university fees paid by you. For a dependant with a disability, the Act asks for a court order or other legal document, a medical certificate, proof of financial dependence and proof of residence, cohabitation or direct care.

Costs by family size

On the fund route:

FamilyContributionFeesTotal
Couple$240,000$16,000$256,000
Couple + 2 children under 16$240,000$18,000$258,000
Couple + 3 children under 16$250,000$19,000$269,000
Couple + 2 children + a parent over 55$260,000$24,000$284,000

The last line is my calculation: the parent is a fourth dependant aged 18 or over, so the fund adds $20,000, and the parent pays $1,000 processing and $5,000 due diligence. Children 16 and over also pay $5,000 due diligence each. On real estate the investment stays $300,000, and only the administration fee grows with the family.

Adding family later

The CIU FAQ allows three cases after citizenship:

  • a qualifying dependant at the time of the original application, within five years;
  • a child born after the grant;
  • a spouse married after the grant.

The CIU fee page sets the fund contribution for these later additions at $5,000 for a newborn up to 12 months, $35,000 for a spouse and $25,000 for another dependant, plus processing and due diligence.

My advice

Count every age against the date of submission. A parent who is 55 today and 56 in four months is a reason to wait. A sibling who turns 18 before submission no longer qualifies. If an adult child is financially independent, a separate application is often cleaner. BRIDGES has more examples, and the cost guide gives the full fee tables.

Questions and answers

Can I include my parents?

Yes, a parent of you or your spouse who is over 55 and fully supported by you.

Can my adult son be included?

Yes, if he is 30 or younger and fully supported by you. A child of 21 or younger qualifies without the support condition.

Can I include my brother or sister?

Only an unmarried brother or sister under 18, with the consent of their parent or guardian.

Can I add family after I become a citizen?

Yes: a child born after, a spouse married after, and a dependant who qualified at the time of application, within five years. Fees range from $5,000 to $35,000.
